The Many Faces of Cyber-Crime:The Implications on E-banking
Technology, particularly IT has brought to mankind a number of features and service delivery channels aimed at offering convenience, enhanced productivity and profitability
but not without trade-offs. Crime, fraud and insecurity are some of the associated
snags which have hindered in no smaII measure the wide application of IT.
This paper reviews the different forms of crime perpetrated through IT, the
effects on e-banking and the possible solutions for a wider acceptability
Design and Implementation of a Secure i-Voting System
There is concern ih many democracies about the declining rates in voter's turnout and more
generally, the (perceived) t~end towards political apathy. The reason is attributed to lack of trust in the
political/democratic proces.( One of the measures considered to encourage participation in the polity is to
simplify the election procedure by introducing electronic voting, and in particular, Internet voting. It is
expected that this will incrhase voter's convenience and voter's confidence in the accuracy of election
results. Internet voting mett1zs the casting of a secure and secret electronic ballot that is transmitted to
electoral officials using th'e Internet. Internet voting is a new way of implementing democracy and
eliminating some of the .fallp.cies of paper ballot voting.
This paper propose~ the development (~fa dynamic online voter registration system; provides a
robust /-voting architectw'e; and designs and implements a secure Internet voting system based on
Biometric features using filzge1print authentication mechanism. The system runs on platforms such as
the personal computers, Op'eni:ting Systems (UNIX, and Windows XP), and Browsers (Microsoft Internet
Explorer, etc.). The ballots \vere formatted using HTML and ]avaScript, and audio sound integrated into
it with the use of SWiSH max software. The server side is a java/Php application that provides access to
MySQL database rzuzning dn an Apache web server.
Security is incorpoiated into the system with the use of the N- Tier architecture inc01porating the
Demilitarized Zone [DMZ). The system offers enhanced speed and efficiency, and it eliminates the
"grey" area of voting, lwnian (!rror and bias. Further, it will allow for a broader spectrum ~f voters to
exercise their rights anywh~re there is Internet access and at the voters' convenience.
Furthermore, the system offered bimodal authentication mechanisms through the use of
fingerprint and password, 'which helped a great deal to prevent multiple registrations l~{ voters. It also
helps to increase the confidence of voters in the electoral process. In addition, the interest of the disabled,
particularly, the sight impaired is taking into consideration through the provision of audio sound to aid
them in the process of casting their votes
Designing a Reliable E-payment System: Nigeria a Case Study
The Nigerian economy is largely cash-based with a lot of money residing outside the
~anking system. To a greater extent. this has hindered the pm1icipation of her citizens in
e-commerce where e-payment is the acceptable means of settling transactions. This paper
teviews thee-readiness of Nigeria as a country: the available payment methods: the
llotivation and opportunity fore-commerce; and the challenges motivating its wider
.-rrications. We propose: a legal framework among the stakeholders and government to
guide the operations of the scheme; a public-private-partnership (PPP) initiative to
manage the entire system with a view to guaranteeing security, confidence and effective
controL and a robust e-payment architecture
Information Technology-Interoperability Issues: The Challenges of Bank Recapitalization and Consolidation
The recent recapitalization drive of the Central Bank Nigeria (CBN) is aimed
at reshaping the Banking industry where customers and investors can build
some degree of confidence in the system. Out of the eighty nine (89) banks in the
country' only very few of them will be able to weather the storm. Lately there has
been a number of recapitalization drives through the sales of securities while
some took to the option of mergers and acquisitions.
However recapitalization may not be without technological hitches resulting
from the integration of various infrastructures of different banks coming
together. This paper attempts to review the compatibility issues using the Simple
object Access Protocol (SOAP) and the XML-based (Extended Markup
language) integration layer with the aim of proffering solutions at reduced
cost and complexit
Towards Nigeria’s Vision 2020: Demystifying the Challenge of Multiple Taxation in Nigerian Manufacturing Companies
The World Bank ranks Nigeria 125th out of 183 economies in the world over the cost of doing business in the country. A major parameter for this assessment is using the incidences of regulatory controls and taxation of business activity to determine the ease of doing business in Nigeria (Humphrey, 2010).Taxation is the system of raising money by making corporate organizations and individuals, whether alive or dead, pay taxes and levies. It is interesting to note that even the dead pay taxes on their investments like: dividend on shares or estate, which they leave behind, in form of capital transfer, tax on properties bequeathed by the dead to children, relatives, among others. Taxation is a compulsory extraction of money by a public authority for public purposes such as providing conducive conditions for achievement of vision 2020 goals. It is a system of raising money for the purpose of government by means of contribution from individual persons or corporate bodies (Lekan and Sunday, 2006). Even though tax payers may receive nothing identifiable in return for their contribution, they nevertheless have the benefit of living in a relatively educated and safe society (Nightingale, 1999; Nigerian Compass, 2010)
